Welcome to the first in our Secrets of the Chakras series!

This and every Friday, we will work up the spine to describe each chakra in order.

For the first in the series, we will focus on the Muladhara, or Root chakra.

This chakra sits at the very base of our spine, and is represented by a rich, deep red.

Also, fun fact, each chakra has its own mantra, with the root chakra's being LAM.

This is the chakra that differentiates animals from humans; it is the base of what makes us who we are.

Muladhara is known for grounding, stability, vitality, vigor, and growth.

The artistic representation of the muladhara is usually depicted with 4 petals, each one representing the four functions of the psyche; ego, intellect, consciousness, and mind.

Each chakra also has a designated animal, with this one being the seven-trunked elephant. This is a symbol of wisdom, and the seven trunks represent the seven treasures of Earth.

Some yoga asanas that open the muladhara chakra include yogi squat, pigeon pose, downward facing dog, and mountain pose.

It is very important to work on opening the chakras from the ground up.

You can not escalate past one chakra without first opening the one beneath it.

Tune in next week for a description of the Svadhisthana, or Sacral chakra.
