Finding a place to meditate isn't always easy.
Sometimes the kids find you and break your concentration, you can hear the TV in the other room, there's construction outside of your apartment... the list goes on.
I've lived in cities most of my life so I got pretty clever at finding nice little nooks and crannies to find my inner peace.
Here are some of those magic spaces I've found over the years.
I know I said I've grown up in cities, and I have! I was lucky enough to live places where the forest was only 20-30 minutes away.
Now I know this seems like a haul just to meditate, but removing myself from the hustle and bustle of city life to reconnect with nature was always worth the hassle.
If you really want to take it to the next level, take your shoes off, reconnect with Mother Earth, and go for a barefoot walking meditation. Focus on your breaths, steps, and surroundings.
There are always parks in cities that are somewhat less noisy and busy than most parts.
You can also reconnect with nature here by sitting under trees and meditating. It has been proven that humans and trees share cyclical energy when someone meditates in the shade of a tree.
Still can't deal with the noise? Put in some headphones and listen to mantras. Shiva & Lakshmi mantras do the trick for me.
Now this works best in nature, such as a lake or the ocean, but if you live somewhere like New York, this probably isn't a good idea.
Your bathtub or pool works as well.
Sit calmly in the water, feel the absence of touch on your body, and absorb the healing, cleansing energy of water flowing freely over your skin.
Most yoga centers are totally okay with you stopping in just to use the space.
As long as you have a membership and there is an open room, they will more than likely allow you to occupy the space.
I always did this at Synergy in Miami Beach with no problem and great success.
This may sound crazy, but I've found great success meditating in the middle of everything.
It is an excellent exercise to clear your mind of distractions and to bring your focus within.
Don't get me wrong, it takes time, patience, and effort, but once I mastered successfully meditating in the middle of a busy intersection in South Beach, Miami, I was then able to meditate anywhere.
----------
The goal of meditation is not to clear the mind, but rather give the mind something to focus on; I focus on my breath and bandhas.
At the end of the day, it really does not matter where you are, as long as you are carrying out the meditation practice consistently and regularly.
