The Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Meaning “brow,” the third eye chakra is the sixth of the seven chakras, and the first to be seated within the head or cranium. As the name suggests, the third eye chakra is associated with our inner sight, or intuition.

Seeing and understanding things that are not of the physical realm, like dreams or spiritual truths, is the role of the third eye chakra.

Location of the Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra sits between your eyebrows, just at the top of your nose bridge. If you have ever “furrowed your brow” in an attempt to see or understand something, you were connecting to this part of your body! Some traditions honor this sacred area by wearing various decorations there, such as a bindi.

Symbols of the Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is represented by the color indigo. This color is rich and deep, representing the depths of our inner mind and subconscious that our third eye chakra helps us access. Like the inky color of a night sky, the third eye chakra encompasses things we cannot see, things within the shadows of our minds, and our dreams.

Each chakra has certain sounds or syllables associated with it, but the third eye chakra has perhaps the best known one: Om, said to be the core sound of the entire universe. From pop music to mystic meditations, this sacred syllable has inspired millions to connect with the intuitive energies of the third eye chakra.

Working with the Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra helps us tune into the quiet, deep truths within ourselves and within our universe. Considering our dreams, or setting an intention before we go to sleep, can help us connect with our third eye chakra. Sitting in darkness, closing our eyes, or taking a walk under a starry sky, can help focus our mind on seeing what is within us rather than getting distracted by what is beyond us.

There are a number of chants or meditations that can help when working with the third eye chakra. Try one of these:

  • The truth I seek rests within me
  • I can trust my intuition and inner guidance
  • Not all that is seen is true; not all that is true can be seen

  • Visualizations often help in chakra work. When meditating with, or working to awaken, your third eye chakra, picture the rich indigo darkness behind your eyes, the infinite night sky of your own mind, with stars twinkling among your thoughts. Picture your sight turning inward, willing and able to look into your self, and see what you could not see before.

Crystals for the Third Eye Chakra

The dark indigo color of the third eye chakra isn’t easy to find in nature, but its rarity makes it even more powerful when working with healing crystals.

Obsidian, with its translucent darkness, is an excellent choice. Fluorite and Amethyst are also good for those seeking to connect with their third eye chakra.

I have always had an interest in the healing of crystals and used to take classes in
Tenafly with a young woman. We hung in hammocks from the ceiling and she did guided
meditations. After each class she introduced a different crystal or rock and explained the
powers or results from each one. I find this technique fascinating. She has since moved
away and I still have all my crystals and have starting investing in Vinaya and their products.

I thank you Vinaya for sharing. My son brought me the most beautiful amethyst heart, that I wear often.
