Halloween is here--- are you ready to slay?
As many of you know, Halloween is very known to us as an annual event every October 31st.
You may go to a couple parties, or take your children trick-or-treating, but everyone knows that Halloween is associated with candy, scary things, and costumes.
But why? Why is it celebrated? Where does it come from?
It came from our ancient Celts tribe, which was their Samhain festival.
The festival features a bonfire and people wear costumes of ghosts. During the 8th century, Gregory the Third designated the celebration during November 1st to honor all the saints.
This celebration incorporates the Samhain traditions.
Over time, it evolved in different activities like festive gatherings, a trick or treat, donning costumes and carving pumpkin lanterns.
The origin of Halloween was dated back during the Celtic Samhain festival.
Celts live more than 2000 years ago and are known in the countries of Ireland, Northern Francs and the United Kingdom.
Celts have a belief that during the night before the new year, the dead and the living’s boundary became blurred. And on October 31st, they believed that ghosts from the other world visit the Earth.
Additionally, Celts believed that spirits presences give power to the Druids/Celtic priests to predict the future.
The prophecies are essential for them to provide assurance and direction in the long winter.
To celebrate the event, Celts builds large bonfires that are sacred to them, their tribe gathers and sacrifices some animals to their deities.
They wore costumes that are made from animal skins and heads.
The Halloween celebration was limited in the colony of New England only due to the Protestant belief.
Mostly, it is normal in Maryland and southern colonies. As the custom and beliefs from different parts of Europe and Indian American combine, the American version of this festivity started to emerge.
Some celebrate for play parties. These are public events held to celebrate the harvest.
Villagers share their ghost stories and share their fortune, sing and dance under the moonlight.
Colonial Halloween is also festivities that feature ghosts’ stories and similar kinds. During the 19th century, an annual festivity in autumn was normal, however,
Halloween wasn’t celebrated yet in the whole country. In the second half of the 19th century, American then was flooded with immigrants.
The new races like with Irish blood helped popularize Halloween celebration.
The name came from Catholicism as ‘all-Hallowmas’, a day to honor the saints and the deceased.
On the 17th century, the Christian people spread through Celtic's land and influences their religion and traditions, which include the popular Samhain holiday.
All-Hallows even later become Halloween.
Halloween is a religious and secular holiday. it is often celebrated by end of October.
Christians celebrate All-Saints Day during this time.
This celebration is marked with spooky decors, costumes and kids trick or treat parties.
Whatever kind of celebration you have and whatever belief you are accustomed to, Halloween is a celebration for the living and the dead.
Most often, people nowadays will visit the church and the cemetery to commemorate the day of the dead.
Some will also prepare foods and light a candle on their household.
