Have you seen or heard of malas before?

Since the dawn of time, man has used stone beads strung in a circle as a powerful spiritual symbol.
Mala, which means a garland of beads, flowers or prayers, is also known as a rosary or prayer beads.
Much more--- So what are mala beads?

The meaning in Malas. . .

"Mala" is a word from the Sanskrit language meaning "garland" or "meditation garland". Mala's have been around for thousands of years with the first mention of them being traced to 800 B.C.E.

Mala beads are known by a lot of names. You may see them referred to as japamala, prayer beads, meditation beads, mala necklaces, mala bracelets, or mala jewelry.

They’re commonly used by Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and some Sikhs for the meditative practice known as japa, which involves focusing on the repetition of a mantra.

 The 108 beads. . .

The number 108 is considered a sacred number in Hinduism, Buddhism and yogic tradition.

Malas or Japa beads come in a string of 108 and are used for devotional meditation, mantra and prayer. ...

This is the guiding bead and marks the beginning and end of the mala/chant/prayer/mantra.

 The Guru beads. . .

A guru bead is traditionally used in Mala jewelry. It signifies the end of one round in the prayer circle.

When using a Mala for meditation, you would start by holding your guru bead and setting your intention for your practice.

You would then use the mala for your meditation as you breathe or count a mantra over each bead.

The Tassel. . .

The function of the tassel is to anchor the mala’s stringing cord at the end of the guru/Meru bead and to also hide the end knot of the stringing material.

A proper mala bead tassel should be made at the last stage of a mala’s construction to incorporate the cord and the final knot.

A pre-made tassel attached or added on after construction does not have the same function or hold the same symbology as a tassel that is made as an integral part of the mala.

The tassel represents a connection to spirit or your highest truth.

Mala Beads for Meditation. . .

These beautiful 108 bead necklaces can be used in meditation to count repetitions of mantras, prayers or affirmations by rotating the beads between the thumb and fingers.

Worn on the body, either inside or outside clothing, these sacred pieces will carry the positive, healing qualities of the stones into your personal energy field.

Mala prayer beads are excellent tools to help you keep your focus while chanting mantras. Hold the beads in your hand and feel their energy as you meditate.

Mala beads are so much more than a trendy fashion-statement but a powerful and symbolic tool for meditation.

How to use them. . .

A common way to use mala beads is to track a mantra meditation.

During mantra meditation, you would recite repetitively a single sound eg. “ohm”, affirmations, or a traditional Sanskrit mantra.

Start your mantra meditation

Choose a mantra

Sit in a comfortable position

Take a few rounds of deep breaths

Relax your mind and body before you start

Start repeating your mantra with the aid of your mala beads

Hold the mala in your right hand and between the thumb and middle finger.

Start at the guru bead and use your thumb to move the mala one bead at a time

Repeat your mantra in your head each time you move a mala bead

After 108 repetitions, you will come back to the guru bead

Inhale deeply

Exhale and open your eyes gently

Positive Affirmation . . .

Positive affirmations are a great way to get into mantra meditation.

I am strong and powerful
I am getting better every day in every way
I am wise
My every desire is achievable
I am a winner
I am fearless
I choose hope over fear
I am highly favoured and greatly blessed
I am successful
My body is a temple, I love and respect it
