Vishuddhi means “pure.” It is the fifth chakra, but the first of the “upper” chakras. Associated with purification and discernment, this chakra allows us to differentiate between negative and positive energies, and make wise decisions. When we are cut off from this chakra, we can become “poisoned” by our own choices, unable to act on our own best interests and chasing after things that don’t serve us.

Wisdom and discernment are the fruits of the throat chakra, and working with this part of our energetic selves can help us make calmer, more rational choices. Identifying and speaking truth are difficult if this chakra is blocked, but an open throat chakra leads to clear speech and the ability to value honesty.

Location of the Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is located at the base of the neck, within the throat. Many people can feel a small hollow where their chest meets their neck, and often our pulse is especially present there. All breath passes through this chakra, and all language and speech arises from there.

Symbols of the Throat Chakra

Blue is the color of the throat chakra, which connects to its “purity” meaning. When we think of something “pure,” many of us imagine a clear blue sky or spring waters, both of which are blue.

Sound and speech are also closely associated with the throat chakra. When we speak, our voicebox vibrates with sound, allowing others to hear us. When others speak, their words cause our inner ear to vibrate, which our brains translate into speech. All of these sound vibrations are connected to our throat chakra.

Working with the Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is connected to our mouth and ears, allowing us to hear and speak. Singing is an excellent way to open our throat chakra, as is listening to music or using a singing bowl or gong. Reading inspiring words by others, or listening to inspirational speech from a leader you admire, can also help you tap into the wise energies of this chakra.

Since the throat chakra is especially associated with words and speech, mantras are crucial when working to awaken it. Try one of these meditations:

  • Living well requires hearing and accepting truth
  • It is within my power to choose life and health
  • I speak nothing but truth and love

  • Visualizations often help in chakra work. When meditating with, or working to awaken, your throat chakra, picture your breath moving down your throat as a blue flow, resting and pooling at your throat chakra before being exhaled. You can also try drinking cool water and noticing how it feels as it passes and soothes your throat chakra.

    Crystals for the Throat Chakra

Blue - typically a darker and more opaque blue - is the color of the throat chakra, meaning that healing stones in this color are best for throat chakra work. Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli are excellent choices, as are Apatite and Aquamarine.
